Engineering Success!

Engineering Success!

Students from Primary and Secondary came together on Wednesday to join with 17 other local schools at Locomotion in Shildon, to celebrate success in engineering.

The Great Engineers School Challenge is an annual competition where schools from across the area compete to be Great Engineers. Each school is supported by a volunteer from the challenge organisers, who‘s role is to advise and guide students in the independent completion of 6 Meccano models per team.

Students also completed a short written report to explain the reason they chose their model, the challenges they faced in its production, and what they would do differently next time.

The entries are judged in 3 parts, firstly, individual models, each school group will be awarded 1st , 2nd and 3rd place based on the quality of both model and write up. The winners in each school group receive a certificate to acknowledge their achievement.

I am overjoyed to announce that the hard work and dedication of our students, Tim our volunteer coordinator, Mrs Hall (Primary DT lead), Dr Wilson and Mrs Butler (Secondary DT lead) paid off; with the Christ’s College Collective team achieving 1st place overall. The Cup and all of the amazing student work will be displayed in school very soon. Students were a credit to our school in both attitude and behaviour.

As well as the Prize giving ceremony, students spent the morning submerged in creative engineering exercises with stalls from CAT and Beamish engineers amongst others.

Overall our students had a fabulous extended enrichment experience, learning about engineering careers, challenging themselves to overcome problems and developing teamwork and tenacity; culminating in an interesting and rewarding day out. Important skills which will see them well in the future and something to add to their CV. Huge thankyou and well done to everyone involved, a true team effort as always.
